Its going to take alot more than a Mail update to satisfy me... but its a start.

Yeah, with this previewing four months ahead of Macworld, I'd say we're headed for a major upgrade of .Mac with even tighter integration to Mail, iCal and iLife.

I still hope Mail and iCal will be collapsed into one app in Leopard.

12 PB doesn't sound like a lot for iTunes in the cloud. I mean if that's 12 million GB's that would only store about ~500,000 people with the amount of music I have. My libraries at 24GB and growing, but I know people with multiple 100 GB libraries.

And even if it's just a small 1 GB library, 12 PB would only cover 12 million people with libraries of that size, which again is small considering the sheer amount of people using iTunes/iPods/iPhones.

These new features sound awesome, especially the ability to resize a text box. Also the imroved search functionality will be a god send for me, as I use it very much.

I still can't get why Apple uses Safari. Totally doesn't fit in their 'good, innovating software' thing. I'd expect Opera to be made by Apple.
But opera is full of bloat features and doesn't perform at all macishly..

I have issues with Safari too though, on a lot of sites I visit it's unreasonably slow in comparison to Firefox/Camino.. The Firefox 2 betas are shaping up great. :)

I'm not sure of the point of the resizing text box thing.. i've never wanted that to be possible whilst using any browser, safari or not. The new tab stuff sounds very handy though!

LOL. They "need" the info to offer us a better deal. Priceless.

Of course. Say you are a subscriber and then decide to cancel for some reason - maybe it's too expensive.

When a cheaper version becomes available, FT would like to be able to contact you to let you know about the new deal.

Or maybe they would like to offer you a welcome back deal.

    Or maybe...

The point is, there are a lot of reasons a company would want this information that does not involve selling your information to someone else.

Regarding Rollover Minutes: If you reduce your minutes to a 700 minute plan, they will reduce your RO minutes from whatever you had to 700 minutes. If you call c/s (and ask nicely), they can let you keep up to 5000 RO minutes.

I've done it several times with no problems.

great, now Toast can concentrate on compatibility issues on the DVD-R side... i've had nothing but problems with my Plextor 716A (DL) and I can't burn higher than 2x without underrun errors on either my new MBP or the Plextor. Different media hasn't helped.

That's odd, my friend is using, well was, a 700Mhz G3 iBook with 640mb RAM and the same Plextor 716A FW drive which can burn at 16X
Same software, wonder what is going on with yours :o

One even more important change, which I KNOW they won't do, is use a universal radio chip that can support GOS and CDMA networks - no more having to buy a new phone every time you switch carriers - oops, that cuts agains Apple's AND the carriers interest - not much traction there.

It could potentially reduce Apple's manufacturing costs, so there may be some traction there.

Apple does offer something for smaller companies for which a 30% for payment handling might actually be a good deal.

    True.

I don't think this one has been mentioned.... I think Microsoft's Remote Desktop is a wonderful app. I have had my iBook for almost a year now and Remote Desktop was one of the major reasons I decided to delve into the Mac world. I go to a college with abundant wireless access and I can basically use my Mac as both a Mac and PC (Remote Desktop allows you to remotely log in to a windows machine). And don't just on me for this.....there are some programs at school we have to use that are Windows only....

Did you put the CRT in upside down? I'm pretty sure the connectors will fit in one-way only.

The SE/30 is surprisingly desirable among classic 68k guys. Unlike the regular SE, its much faster and supports 128MB of RAM. If its as nice as you say, I would be well over $100 for it.

I am curious as to why diesel never caught on in the US despite most automakers producing diesel models.

    The engines last longer. ;)

Why reform income tax? Get rid of it. Institute a federal property tax (not just real estate) with a moderate cut off (like, say, the first $60K). You can obscure income with all manner of accounting tricks, stuff is much harder to hide.

Yes, it would be a logistical nightmare to get implemented, but once in place it would be much simpler (not that simple means fair, necessarily), and we would be back to the original intent of the constitution.

Now you made me doubt myself, gonna go check the bluray. :)

And about Button, ah so I suppose the extra 50 mil makes you go AMC. :)

Edit: Checked the blu ray, I stand corrected they are using Avid. When I saw the Apple keyboards and Apple Cinema displays with OS X background all over the place, I must have automatically assumed it was FCP. Why would they use macs for AMC though?

The first Avid came out in 1989 on a Mac IIx. Most people up until a couple of years ago where still editing with Avid Xpress/Film Composer on Power Macintosh 9600's and G3/G4 machines because they cut and cut really well. You used to not be able to separate the word Apple from Avid until they started being bad about working with other developers over the span of OS X. I.E. Avid, Adobe & Macromedia. And developing competing products. You've seen what Steve can do with a product like flash and ban it from an OS. So Adobe and Avid started not putting all their eggs in one basket and that's why you started seeing alot of software on apple's migrate to PC's because of Apple's behavior for better or worse.

I still love cutting on a MAC though I started a young poor PC guy that couldn't afford a G4 tower and cinema display.

Sweet. But, there's more to just piggybacking on your mac's airport connection to make calls. I think more has to be done to make this networking possible.

There are already wi-fi enabled phones that can make Skype calls if you have a wi-fi connection. This is nothing new or groundbreaking.

Well this certainly beats that ipod integration nonsense. MP3 player phones are a dime a dozen, I'd rather see great communication device that take how the user communicates to the next level, not just stuff a music player in it.

MP3 player phones are a dime a dozen and also *hugely* popular. Look at how well the LG Chocolate is doing with their craptacular phone. The iPhone *must* have iPod integration to be a success, IMO. At minimum it must have seamless iPod integration and a decent-to-good phone experience. Everything else is gravy.

Many manufacturers already do this with their unlocked phones - but they just store the settings on the phones (no need to connect to a computer).
Manufacturers selling unlocked phones is common elsewhere and is now already beginning in the States.
This won't fly - usage is terrible and would make dialing slower than it currently is. And texting would truly suck.

In fact, Sony launched their w800i phone unlocked in the U.S. (was only availalbe from the Sony Style store). The thing is, at $500 it was extremely cost-prohibitive and definitely aimed at technology early adopters. I'm sorry, but phones are just too darn expensive at full retail price. Apple *needs* the subsidy for signing a new contract. That's the only thing that will make the price competitive for the mass market. I expect Apple will partner with T-Mobile and/or Cingular, and that the phone will be available for no more than $300 with new contract (and even that is expensive by today's standards).

Do you mean latency? evdo gives up to 3mbps in urban areas. That should be plenty.

EV-DO is not available on GSM networks in the US. As far as I know the GSM providers (basically T-Mobile and Cingular) are using HSDPA for their 3G network. And everything I've heard about it has been good. The early reports on the Cingular 3G network are that it's quite zippy and handles streaming video just fine...

I also like the idea of using the click wheel to make a retro style digital-rotary phone. However, I doubt Apple would just display the numbers on the screen and not on the unit. So when in dial mode, you would spin the click wheel and the numbers, displayed on the display in a circle, would highlight the number that you were on and then click the center button on the click wheel to select. If you wanted to get really old school, you could have the rotary sounds come through the headphones. Or course you would still be able to dial by your address book or search through a downloaded version of the white or yellow pages (which would naturally sync into your phone whenever you charge it at home, via blue tooth or direct connection to your computer).

Text messaging is extremely popular and I just don't see Apple crippling text messaging on the iPhone. Can you see inputting a 120-character text message on a "rotary-style" interface? Yeah, I can't either. Any kind of rotary interface on the iPhone is a non-starter idea, IMO.

P.S. The title of this thread is: "iChat Phone from Apple?". Kind of implies that there must be as simple, fast way to input text, right? I'm thinking a full qwerty keyboard is a definite possibility...
