[QUOTE=thermodynamic;12493443I recently bought Drive Genius 3 ... has anybody tried the defragment utility? If so, is it worth the time to use?
[/QUOTE]
If the time it is defragging is when you're asleep, then you won't notice how long it takes. Apple says there's no need to defrag, but I do it, and it makes a difference at least in the number of fragments, if not performance.

Did you download the free upgrade to PT 8.0.4? I have an Mbox 2 Pro hooked up to a new MBP using a FW 400-800 cable, and it worked fine after I upgraded PT to 8.04. I didn't have to do any "stuff in the firmware folder" (what exactly did you do, anyway?).

I moved my MS Word from the dock (I didn't even know I did that) and now every time I try to open it, it crashes. Power Point Excel and Outlook work fine and I don't have the installation disks. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!! Here is the report:

I'm based in the UK and I'm pretty shocked by Sky's poor coverage of The Masters. Players teeing off from around 1300BST, yet Sky doesn't start their coverage till 1900BST!
Is it like this in America too? Why no coverage until 1900?

There are alot of keyboard shortcuts for Greek letter that are helpful in graphing
For example pi is (Alt/Option)+(P)
square root is (alt/option)+(V)

How long have you had the computer, and how long has it been acting this way? Did it start after you changed any Hardware or Software on it?

Why were you trying to install MySQL?
All Macs ship with MySQL already installed.
BTW, you also get Apache and PhP.

Here is an overview of 20 Javascript visualization libraries...
http://sixrevisions.com/javascript/20-fresh-javascript-data-visualization-libraries/
I have heard good things about Protovis (listed on that site).
Also take a look at: http://mbostock.github.com/d3/
you mention silverlight (which I don't work in) so it seems that something plug-in based is not out of the question. The Flex charting components are very popular, have been around for a long time, and are easy to work with as well if you don't want to have to learn a JS library.

Steve Rosenbaum needs to learn how to use spell/grammar check. I've come to expect "loose" instead of "lose" and other spelling/grammar errors in forums, but this is an article on the Huffington Post. I got a little more than halfway through before I had to close the tab.
My personal favourite was the following opening few words to a paragraph, "google tv apple Apple wins on look and feel..."
Is it the iPhone auto-correct? And :apple:TV logo for the Apple logo?

I have a G5, so no Intel, can't speak for an Intel machine, just answering his question. Because a Macbook has 2 cores, it's best to work with two instances of folding, not 4. You can do that, but it goes slower and you might not finish a WU within its deadline.

hey all,
*i am* not actually selling this on MR, but a friend of mine wanted to know what a fair asking price for this would be. given it's two years old and its battery life is not what it used to be, what would a good price be? i figured my smart mac friends would know, even though this IS MR lol. thanks in advance.

I don't have any personal experience, but you might want to try asking the guys over at the 68kmla (http://68kmla.org/). I know that SCSI-IDE-CF is a bit hit or miss with the older Macs - the only solution that seems to work consistently is the CF PowerMonster, which goes from SCSI straight to CF. The problem there is price though - it's $99, if I recall. Here's some more information on it:

There are a few things that will determine the speed.
Type of cable, are you using at least a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable? Have you tried swapping with another cable connected to a device that is connecting at gigabit?
Settings on the Mac, have you checked to see that its set to automatic?
What is it connecting to? A gigabit port or something different?
Have tried the above, with another machine which does connect at 1000 using the same cables and same location in the house and its works fine...
all router ports are 10/100/1000
I think i have narrowed this down to an issue with the mac its self. Im not to clued up on mac os fine configuration, and have not been able to find anywhere to force or change the link speed.... Please correct me if im wrong...

Try and return it for a refund/replacement. I haven't heard any other complaints.
